Great job as always Steve. It appears that both you and I view Guidry as a very special player. To this day, I've never seen a pitcher have a better year than his 1978. Anybody who was following along that year knows that every Guidry win was absolutely essential in catching the Red Sox and ultimately winning the World Series.
I always thought his MVP snub was one of the more blatant given that the proof was in the pudding. Not only was his season one for the ages, but his 4-0 record against the Sox that year happened with Jim Rice in the lineup. Rice, who otherwise had a good career against Gator, did absolutely nothing against him in '78. I think he had one RBI in those games and batted somewhere around .200. If Rice was the MVP, and was chosen over Guidry, he should have been able to take him yard at least once or twice or somehow mangage to keep Guidry from going undefeated against the Bosox.
As most Yankee fans remember, Guidry went into that 163rd game at Boston on short rest with his arm ready to fall off and still won the game(Rice was 1 for 5). The Yankees record in his starts was an absurd 30-5. If that isn't an MVP, I have no idea why the award is even given out.
